EBC's Essential Steps to Employability - Year 1
EBC is delivering its latest project for adults - Essential Steps to Employability - thanks to funding from Sunderland City Council's Working Neighbourhoods Fund. The project is just one of the city's many Just the Job activities to support people back into work.
EBC has now successfully transferred it creativity and innovation into the adult learning sector through the delivery of a number of programmes for adults of all ages, abilities and interests. Essential Steps to Employability is the latest example of our work with adults. Among our first clients are a group that has secured OCN qualifications..... and several have now got jobs. Dozens more secured qualifications in Year 1.
Based on our Year 1 successes the programme has been revised for Year 2. You can find out more by visiting our Essential Steps to Employability Year 2 page.
Using some of the programmes and activities developed through our work with young people EBC has developed its Essential Steps to Employability programme which offers a range of interactive, engaging and innovative activities for adults.

Made up of five components this programme aims to build up participants' ICT skills through a range of three hour workshops designed to introduce them to the most common kinds of software used in both the workplace and in leisure time.
Each component, or set of workshops, is self contained - so participants can complete one, two or all of them and an initialone-to-one Information Advice and Guidance (IAG) session is held to establish particpants' baseline skills and abilities.
Each workshop package introduces participants to different computer software packages – the most commonly used in the modern workplace (Word, Publisher, Powerpoint).
In addition Bridging the Gap Through Technology also sees participants gaining skills in using a video camera and media editing equipment to create their own DVD CV.

Programme Four - Entry level accredited learning programme through the National Open College Network
NOCN (National Open College Network) Skills Towards
Enabling Progression (Step-Up) Qualifications
The suite of Step Up qualifications offered through the National Open College Network (NOCN) is devised to progress learners into further learning or employment. The use of the units allows EBC to create individualised learning programmes tailored to participants needs whilst enabling learners to achieve or work towards a national qualification and
improve their opportunities for progression. The qualifications are particularly designed to:
- Engage and motivate learners to identify their individual and personal strengths for progression.
- Provide learning opportunities that enable participants to realise their potential to progress further in learning.
- Provide information and advice to learners on possible progression routes
- Recognise learning achievement through NOCN credits
- Enable learners to develop their literacy and/or numeracy skills

Programme Five - Level 1 or Level 2 accredited learning through the NCFE
EBC is an accredited centre for the delivery of a number of NCFE qualifications which are being offered to participants taking part in Essential Steps to Employability.
NCFE qualifications offer the opportunity for learners to gain qualifications outside a traditional learning environment - in community venues in which they feel comfortable and secure.
They also allow participants to draw upon their life skills and experiences - not just their academic ability - through practical application in real life settings.
EBC is offering the following learning programmes to participants in Essential Steps to Employability:
A Taste of Enterprise - NCFE’s Level 2 Award in Developing Enterprise Capabilities
Valuing Volunteering - NCFE's Level 2 Certificate in Volunteering
To find out more about this programme visit our NCFE page
Programme Six - Media Masterclass Programmes
Using media equipment such as camcorders, digital cameras and desk top publishing with computers will allow candidates to create their own media products whilst gaining accredited learning through the Open College Network. Small groups will work in a informal setting to plan and create their chosen products over a nbumber of weeks - a DVD, magazine, etc - whilst building up a portfolio of evidence for submission to the Open College.
