C'est la!..... Hier ist es!..... Aqui es!

Beamish Museum and Farringdon School
Farringdon School in Sunderland worked with Beamish Museum in County Durham to create a combined French and German entry in The Language of Leisure competition.
Beamish is a world famous open air museum telling the story of the people of North East England at two important points in their history – 1825 and 1913.
In 1825, the region was rural and thinly populated. The Industrial Revolution, particularly the coming of the railways, accelerated change. By 1913 the heavy industries of the region were at their peak.
Beamish stands in 300 acres of beautiful County Durham countryside, eight miles south west of Newcastle upon Tyne, twelve miles north west of Durham city. It is not a traditional museum. Most of the houses, shops and other buildings have been dismantled, brought to Beamish and rebuilt here. Some - Home Farm, Pockerley Manor and the Drift Mine - were here already. All of the buildings are filled with furniture, machinery and objects, real artefacts from the museum's designated collections
What sets Beamish apart from glass case museums is that the story is told not by labels but by costumed staff who are proud of their heritage and happy to share their knowledge with visitors.
Houghton Kepier and AboutMyArea
A second team from Houghton Kepier used German to create their entry into The Language of Leisure, backed by support from one of the region's newest online information businesses - AboutMyArea.
Unique in its approach to community news, reviews and information about what's going on in North England and surrounding areas, visitors keep logging on and coming back for more.
Each community website is run by a member of the community to benefit it's members and the local economy.
AboutMyArea is the best of the bunch for information on local life and what's happening in North England and surrounding areas. Simply search our vast network to find what you want NOW. You can search different parts of the country for news, events and much more by logging onto www.aboutmyarea.co,uk and selecting the region you want.

Sunderland Empire Theatre and Castle View School
The North East’s premier entertainment venue - the Sunderland Empire Theatre supported pupils from Castle View School in The Language of Leisure challenge.
The pupils chose French as their preferred language for their entry. This beautiful, historic theatre is the North East's home for some of the top West End shows - more than 100 years ater it was opened.
The Sunderland Empire has changed considerably since 1907. Originally, the domed tower was surmounted by a revolving sphere which bore the figure of "Terpischore" the Greek Goddess of dance, not as is commonly thought, Vesta Tilley, who laid its foundation stone in 2006. It has survived the depression of the 1930s, the arrival of television and cinemas in the 1950s to enjoy a massive revivial in recent years - earning it the title of the West End of the North East.
In 2004 the theatre underwent a major facelift and refurbishment thanks to its current owners Live Nation. Alternations to the stage, new lighting and improved sight lines were created whilst the auditorium was re-decorated including some new seating and carpeting.
The interior colour scheme was designed to recreate the original red, cream and gold colouring of the theatre at the time of its opening in 1907, so for the first time theatre-goers have a sense of what the Empire would have looked like on opening night more than 100 years ago.
St Aidan's and The BALTIC
Spanish was the language chosen for the second team of pupils from St Aidan's RC Secondary School who worked with members of staff team at the The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead for their entry into The Language of Leisure competition.
Housed in a landmark industrial building on the south bank of the River Tyne in Gateshead, BALTIC is the biggest gallery of its kind in the world – presenting a dynamic, diverse and international programme of contemporary visual art.
BALTIC has no permanent collection, providing instead an ever-changing calendar of exhibitions and activities that give a unique and compelling insight into contemporary artistic practice. The BALTIC programme ranges from blockbuster exhibitions to innovative new work and projects created by artists working within the local community.
BALTIC is a place where visitors can experience innovative and provocative new art, relax, have fun, learn and discover fresh ideas.
BALTIC receives funding from The National Lottery through Arts Council England, Gateshead Council, Northern Rock Foundation and is supported by the European Regional Development Fund and One NorthEast.
Ferryhill Business and Community College and Sedgefield Racecourse
French was the chosen language for the entry into The Language of Leisure competition created by pupils of Ferryhill Business and Community College - thanks to support from Sedgefield Racecourse.
Nicknamed The Friendly Racecourse because of its warm and relaxing atmosphere, Sedgefield Racecourse is situated in the County Durham countryside.
High quality facilities provide close-to-the-action views with racegoers able to enjoy 19 Jump race meetings, spanning 11 months of the year.
Sedgefield Racecourse is one of Britain’s most popular racecourses. It has extensive hospitality, advertising, branding and sponsorship opportunities. As well as racing there are superb conference, banqueting, Christmas party, wedding and outdoor facilities.
Durham County Cricket Club and Houghton Kepier
A third team of pupils from Houghton Kepier School selected French as their preferred language for their entry into The Language of Leisure competition - backed by Durham County Cricket Club from its ground at The Riverside in Chester-le-Street.
The Riverside is a world class sporting and music venue which regularly attracts visitors from all over the world. The Riverside complex includes Austin’s Bar and Bistro which is open all year round and a Playing for Success Learning Centre which is located on the ground floor of the Media and Education Centre.
It also has fabulous meeting and events facilities, which can cater for up to 300 guests and is the perfect venue for any business meetings or any of life’s special occasions.
Durham FA, Riverside Physiotherapy, Chester le Street Council Sports Pavilion, the Indoor School and Bannatyne’s Health and Fitness Club are also located at the Riverside.
The club was established in 1882 and played its first match at the Riverside in 1995 after around five years of development.
The Language of Leisure competition saw school pupils challenged to work with a business supporter from the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism sector to develop a marketing campaign for their business supporter's organisation which will promote that business to international visitors.
The winning school received a cash prize to spend on resources for its language department. Winners were selected after showcasing their work at a regional event.
Schools and their business supporters were assisted in the challenge by Durham University and University of Sunderland undergraduates with specialist language skills.
As well as giving pupils an exiciting opportunity to gain an insight into the importance and value of modern foreign language skills in the workplace, EBC's Language of Leisure competition will:
- Supported the development of partnerships between businesses and schools.
- Supported schools in accessing and exciting range of on-line resources.
- Increased the knowledge of career opportunities open to students studying a foreign language.
- Developed sustainable partnerships.
