Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities projects
Welcome to the special Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities (NLDC) page of our website which gives you a taste of some of the work we have been doing thanks to funding from Sunderland City Council.
EBC has been making learning fun for people of all ages and abilities thanks to support from Sunderland City Council's Family, Adult and Community Learning section.
We've used activities we've delivered for young people and given them an adult twist to make sure participants got just as much fun as our young clients did, whlst developing key skills such as communication, team work, time management, creativity and problem solving.

Enterprise and Creativity project
This programme was created to help homeless clients of Norcare develop new skills which will help them be better prepared to get back into work.

Each participants first received a one-to-one information advice and guidance session at which they signed up for the programme, discussed what they wanted to achieve and what skills they felt they needed help with.
Full days of activities were then delivered before a second information advice and guidance session at which particpants were able to decide whether they moved on to an accredited training programme which offered the chance to create their own video and gain an Open College Network qualification. Several signed up and secured the qualification.
- The full day sessions saw participants take part in a range of fun-based, practical activities designed to engage and motivate them. This included the challenging, fast paced and innovative Pyramid Game.
In taking part in the programme Norcare clients, as well as having fun, developed a number of important skills including:
- Time management
- Team work
- Task management
- Communication
- Listening to instructions
- Working independently
- Creativity
- Innovation

First Class Careers in the Third Sector
Taking up a volunteering opportunity in your local community can often be the first step back into work after a period of economic inactivity.
First Class Careers in the Third Sector was designed to help young unemployed adults explore this route while identifying their own skills and talents.
The participants developed a range of key employability skills whilst looking at the roles of volunteers, the kind of tasks they might do and the problems and issues they might face.
Their entrepreneurial flair and creativity were developed through a mini-business challenge which saw them set up as a company to produce goods for a profit - requiring team work, delegation, communication, negotiation and task management skills.
Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities funding
Nationally this funding is provided by Learning and Skills Councils to support local voliuntary and community sector organisations to develop their capacity to deliver learning opportunities for reisidents of disadvantaged neighbourhoods.
Sunderland City Council allocated the funding via its Family, Adult and Community Learning section with projects being supported which can evidence they are providing effective learning to hard-to-reach learners, aged 19 and over, from disadvantaged communities.
