Safe, Sensible and Social projects
A new, free downloable game designed to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol misuse in young people is now available on our website - thanks to funding from the NHS South of Tyne and Wear's Safe, Sensible, Social Small Grant scheme.
The game is a combination of traditional snakes and ladders, with players moving forward or back depending upon which square the land on and how they answer questions, and the Monopoly concept of penalty and bonus question cards.
All questions are all designed to improve payers' knowledge of the risks of excessive drinking as well as to trigger informal discussions.
The concept for the game came from clients of the North East Council on Addictions (NECA) in Gateshead who worked with EBC staff to design a prototype of the board game based on their own experiences of the impact alcohol misue has had on their lives and on the lives of those around them.
The NECA clients:
- Identified the issues that needed highlighting with young people including the risk of excessive drinking and the damage it could cause to their lives, relationships and career opportunities and even their skin, weight and appearance.
- Came up with 54 questions and answers that can earn players extra moves around the board.
- Came up with 36 topics to generate discussion around alcohol related issues.
- Came up with 18 '999' penalty scenarios to highlight the dangers of drinking too much.

Thanks to extra funding from the NHS South of Tyne and Wear's Safe, Sensible, Social Small Grant scheme EBC was able to trial the Safe Sensible Social game with both young people and adults as part of a special Safe, Sensible and Social Season event it prganises in Sunderland.
This was held at South Hylton Tansy Centre and also saw local people getting free health and lifestyle checks, discussing their alcohol consumption and any associated dangers with experts from NECA. Young people got the chance to design a poster to warn adults in their lives about the dangers of drinking too much alcohol over the Chrsitmas and New Year period.
There were also fun based quizzes around alcohol-related issues. Around 45 people attended the event - the youngest was aged around 4 and the oldest was 84, with the majority in their 50s. You can see more by visiting our photo album of the event.
Alcohol Misuse - the Reality by those who have suffered
To complement our Safe, Sensible Social board game a series of stark, powerful and simply stunning posters highlighting the dangers of alcohol misuse have been designed by people who have dealt with the issue themselves - thanks to a project delivered by EBC.

All the posters have been turned into downloadable resources for anyone wanting to highlight to young people the dangers of alcohol misuse.

This project was also delivered by EBC thanks to funding from the NHS South of Tyne and Wear's Safe, Sensible, Social Small Grant scheme.
The eye-catching, evocative posters, along with a powerpoint presentation and poignant audio and video interviews, reflect on the impact alcohol misuse can have on people's lives, and those around them.
They were produced by clients of the North East Council on Addictions (NECA) after EBC worked with Sunderland people who have issues with alcohol misuse.
They were asked to design resources which could be used by teachers and others working with young people to highlight the impact alcohol misuse can have on lives.
The project was designed to support more mainstream work that is available to people facing the results of alcohol misuse.
In a fun, interactive way, and in a safe, friendly setting, this project saw EBC working with people who have battled with alcohol misuse.
The aim was to create an online teaching resource pack that can be used to tackle alcohol issues in young people.
The pack offers posters, presentations and interviews created by the people we worked with.
The resources look at the challenges they have faced, the hurdles they've overcome and the issues they are still tackling.
Most importantly it is their words and their messages.
The people we worked with also produced other resources which would be ideal for teachers to use in either discussion groups or as part of a project. See below for details of these downloadable resources.
Don't Think It's All For Kicks!
Carole's story is both disturbing and uplifting. Disturbing as she frankly charts her spiral into alcoholism and the destruction her addiction had on her family. Uplifting as she reflects on her challenging and painful recovery. Carole's story
In Our Own Words
Real life stories of how alcohol took over the lives of five people are retold by the people themselves in a haunting group interview called "In our own words". "In our own words" (You will need Windows Media Player to listen).
Our Stories
Two members of the group we worked with braved the cameras to reflect on their own, personal journies into alcoholism. Their identities have been protected. To watch and listen to their stories click the links below:

Alcohol - the Stark Facts
The people EBC worked with also produced a provoking powerpoint presentation which includes both personal stories and statistical information on alcohol misuse.

EBC secured the funding from the Teaching Primary Care Trust after it launched a fund which aims to support innovative projects from third sector organisations designed to alleviate alcohol-related issues.
The Trust was keen to fund projects which could:
- Improve the health and well being of local people
- Increase services or activities for disadvantaged groups
- Improve the employment prospects, education or skills of local people affected by alcohol-related issues
- Tackle alcohol-related crime and improve community safety
EBC partnered up with the North East Council on Addictions (NECA) to deliver its programme to NECA clients in Sunderland.
