Thanks to continued support from the NHS South of Tyne and Wear's Safe, Sensible, Social,Small Grant scheme EBC was able to extend the range of downloadable resources it has created to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol misuse in young people.

SHY members playing safe sensible board game

EBC received funding to work with a group of members of South Hylton Youth North East group (SHY-NE) to write and perform a play  - A Shot at Life - about the impact alcohol misuse can have on young people's lives.

SHY-NE members led on the script writing and all stages of the production process before performed their production for an invited audience.  You can see them planning and rehearsing the play in their photo album

SHY research leaflets

To help them get to grips with the challenge, SHY members first played our Safe, Sensible Social board game developed through earlier Safe, Sensible, Social small grants funding.

A shot at life script writing and research

Their knowledge of the issues around alcohol misuse were further increased with a briefing session from a member of NECA's team, backed up by internet research.

Script writing, set design and props gathering followed, along with a week of rehearsals before the young people took to the stage to perform their play.

The play - A Shot at Life - tells the story of Chantelle, an 18-year-old girl who finds herself pregnant, verging on alcoholism with few friends or family to support her.

Shot at Life drinking scene

It charts her journey in the two years leading up to her doctor's appointment and then looks into the future to predict one of two routes her life might take - depending upon whether she tackles her drinking problem, or not.

The young people then performed the play before and invited audience with all those present getting the change to receive a DVD produced to record A Shot at Life.
