Safe, Sensible and Social downloadable game
EBC's Safe, Sensible, Social board game is a combination of traditional snakes and ladders, with players moving forward or back depending upon which square the land on and how they answer questions, and the Monopoly concept of penalty and bonus question cards. All questions are all designed to improve payers' knowledge of the risks of excessive drinking as well as to trigger informal discussions. The concept for the game came from clients of the North East Council on Addictions (NECA) in Gateshead who worked with EBC staff to design a prototype of the board game based on their own experiences of the impact alcohol misue has had on their lives and on the lives of those around them. This was held at South Hylton Tansy Centre and also saw local people getting free health and lifestyle checks, discussing their alcohol consumption and any associated dangers with experts from NECA. Young people got the chance to design a poster to warn adults in their lives about the dangers of drinking too much alcohol over the Chrsitmas and New Year period. There were also fun based quizzes around alcohol-related issues. Around 45 people attended the event - the youngest was aged around 4 and the oldest was 84, with the majority in their 50s. EBC secured the funding from the Teaching Primary Care Trust after it launched a fund which aims to support innovative projects from third sector organisations designed to alleviate alcohol-related issues. Thanks to extra funding from the NHS South of Tyne and Wear's Safe, Sensible, Social Small Grant scheme EBC was able to trial the Safe Sensible Social game with both young people and adults as part of a special Safe, Sensible and Social Season event it prganises in Sunderland.
