Webmaster's Note
We've gathered this information from various resources - mainly on the internet. We've used sites identified by key organisations including the DfCSF and DTI however we wish to point out that the views contained in these resources are not necessarily those of EBC, nor any of its partners.
Think Cans
New resources linking recycling to core curriculum subjects have been launched by aluminium recycling company Novelis. ‘Think Cans in the Classroom is part of its ongoing programme to raise awareness of, and encourage participation in, recycling amongst school-age children and their families.
The free, web-based resources provide a range of interactive activities and supporting
information for primary and secondary teachers, plus supplementary information for parents and pupils. The activities can be used across the curriculum in subjects ranging from Science to Design Technology, are compatible with classroom interactive whiteboards and designed to be both exciting and informative,
Funded by revenue from Packaging Waste Recovery Notes (PRNs), the new resources are available free to download from the company’s website www.thinkcans.com
As part of the 2008 National Year of Reading there's a new website designed to encourage creative writing while at the same time raising awareness of the environment. Each month you can read the previous chapters and them write what you think the next chapter should be by submitting your own entry. You can also vote for chapters already written. There are adult, teen and childrens' version of the story. Each story must have a 'green' theme - encouraging young and old to think about how best to look after the environment. Ten chapters will e published as The Green Story at the end of the year. The book will be printed on recycled paper and sold in time for Christmas, with all proceeds going to the Woodland Trust, the UK's largest tree planting charity. Log onto:www.theGreenStory.co.uk to find out more.
All Recycling
The following resources are packed with lots of information about the amount of waste Britain produces each year. They explain the problems and outline methods of tackling the issues in practical and realistic ways. They are all taken from the the www.recycle-more.co.uk website and if you log on you'll find lots more useful information and suggestions on recycling.
We also found these fact posters on the same website which might help in creating classroom displays.
Can Recycling
These resources were taken from the Steel Recycling Information Bureau - www.scrib.org.uk - and contain teacher's notes, with clear links to the National Curriculum and a series of information sheets and activity ideas which either pupils or teachers can instigate as part of a recycling project.
Event Recycling

If your school is planning an event here's a useful brochure on how to consider - and minimise - the environmental impact of the event. We found it on the website of an American-based organisation, which has lots of other resources which would easily cross the Atlantic. Log onto: www.the recyclingfoundation.org
Plastics Recycling
Here's a useful leaflet on the best way to recycle pastics safely. It's taken from the North West Clean Air Agency website. To find out more log onto www.nwcleanair.org

Recycling Mobile Phones
Our consumer society seems to be obsessed with changing mobile phones as often as we change coats - and there's no bigger group of mobile phone consumers than young people. Oxfam has come up with a special recycle mobile phone project. Log onto: www.oxfam.org.uk to find out about the campaign - and access lots of other ideas. If you want to get a taste of the mobile phone project you can also use the links below.
