Teaching Tips, Activity Ideas and Resources
 Welcome to this special sustainable communities resources page of our website. It is packed with resources and ideas for you to use in your school which will bring the topic of sustainable communities to life. It was developed as part of the Our Place 2020 regional schools competition support for schools.
New - Play your Part online teaching toolkit
Teachers of citizenship, drama, geography and PSHE lessons now have a fabulous new on-line resource to bring sustainable communities to life in the classroom. The Play Your Part toolkit is a young person friendly resource developed to introduce the findings of the Egan Review to pupils.
The Play your Part toolkit is an invaluable online active citizenship toolkit supporting teachers to encourage pupils to play an active role in community projects. It includes ideas, resources, activities and teaching aids designed to raise awareness of sustainable communities, inspire young people to play a part in improving their communities and develop the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to devise and run successful citizenship projects.
Click here to visit the site which has four main areas:
- What makes a good community – which encourages students to assess and evaluate their own community, using the Egan Wheel to discuss and debate the components of sustainable communities and a survey to rate their community and suggest ways to improve it;
- What can we do to improve our communities – invites pupils to consider problems in their communities and ways to make them better, using playing cards that look at problems associated with housing, environment, transport and equality and careers cards that highlight the jobs people do to help make sustainable communities;
- Planning and carrying out an active citizenship project – inspires young people to make a difference, using ‘could you’ cards that provide project ideas such as mentoring younger children after school, running an anti-bullying campaign in school or organizing a campaign to save a local post office; and
- Celebrate and evaluate – provides suggestions for teachers about celebrating achievements through assembly presentations, certificates, events and articles in the local paper.

The MSN Environment site has news stories and features covering topics such as petrol prices and rare birds. It also has a range of video eco tips with presenters including Joanna Lumley.

The Green community message boards allow users to share environmentally friendly hints and tips with others and the Take Action section lets people find out about green events and activities in their local area.
Peter Bale, executive producer at Microsoft UK, said: “People are becoming increasingly concerned about the environment and are looking for ways they can help out and become part of the solution rather than the problem.
“The channel is a fun and engaging way to help them stay on top of hot issues and learn more about what they can do to make a difference.”
