The Language of Enterprise Schools Competition

Regional Language Network North East logoEBC has again partnered up with the Regional Language Network North East to run an exciting new competition - The Language of Enterprise.

The competition was designed to give young people the opportunity to develop a prototype of a new product based on the Best of British products and plan its launch on the European Market.

The Language of Enterprise was aimed at inspiring young people to study a modern foreign language while developing their enterprise and creativity.  Up for grabs were four cash prizes for schools to spend on language resources and trophies.

Eight teams from seven schools across the region took part in The Language of Enterprise.

Their prototypes stunned the judges with their innovation, creativity and sheer diversity. and they tasted delicious!

Winners were St Anthony's Girls School with their tasty teatime treat - pinchos. You can see their work in their photo album.

Second place went to pupils of Sunnydale Community College who Sunnydale School's food hampercreated a festive Easter foodhamper filled with tasty goodies.  You can see their work in their photo album.

Products produced included: Pinchos - tasty teamtime treats for European foodies

  • Nellie Bread - a delicious shortbread packaged in colourful tartan boxes for the sweet toothed Spanish
  • Traditional steam puddings designed to pander the tastebuds of the Germans
  • Stunning seasonal hampers for French foodies
  • A much needed tinned version of the North East's favourite dish - Pan Haggerty
  • A make-yourself Pan Haggerty hamper kit complete with recipe and ingredients.

Durham University logoUniversity of Sunderland logoThe Language of Enterprise regional competition was open to Year 7 pupils  in Years 7,8 or 9 (KS3 or KS4) from across the region.

Schools and their business supporters were assisted in the challenge by Durham University and Sunderland University undergraduates with specialist language skills.

As well as giving pupils an exciting opportunity to gain an insight into the importance and value of modern foreign language skills in the workplace, EBC's Language of Enterprise competition saw participating young people:

  • Gain an insight into the value of a modern foreign language in the world of business and entrepreneourship.
  • Develop their modern foreign language skills.
  • Increase their knowledge of the global market and opportunities to launch new products onto the European market.
  • Gain an insight into all stages of product development - from initial ideas conception through to production and product launch, securing finance and attracting investors.
  • Develop key employability skills including team work, communication, independent thinking and accessing advice and guidance.
  • Benefit from the development of partnerships between businesses and schools.
    • Increase their knowledge of career opportunities open to students studying a foreign language.

    Gain an opportunity to meet current under graduates following study programmes which integrate modern foreign language skills and learn more about the range of potential study routes open to them.

Language of Enterprise follows on from EBC's successful Language of Leisure competition in 2009 which saw school pupils challenged to work with a business supporter from the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism sector to develop a marketing campaign for their business supporter's organisation which promoted that business to international visitors.
