Regional Schools' Competition Final Held

Education Business Connection logo

Passionate about education Teams from eight schools from across the region impressed judges with their knowledge of the growing sustainable communities agenda when they competed in the grand final of the Our Place 2020 competition, held at Durham County Cricket Club in Chester-le-Street.

The winner of the competition was County Durham's Wellfield School with pupils receiving £1,000 for their school as well as a trophy.  Runner up was Tees Valley's Thornaby Comomunity School, which received £500, and the third place prize of £250 went to Sacred Hearth RC School, also from Tees Valley.

Throughout the competition pupils were supported by Masterclass Mentors working in the sustainable communities sector.

Other schools which took part in the grand final each received £50 in recognition of their efforts.

"We think that the business of planning, delivering and maintaining sustainable communities ought to be an attractive career option for young people and also for experienced people seeking a career change.

"But to persuade them of this we need to help them make the link between a vibrant community and the occupations that help to create and sustain it."

(Extract from the Egan Review - Skills for Sustainable Communities)

Tyne and Wear Launch of Our place 2020Our Place 2020 aimed to address the challenges outlined in the extract of the Egan Review above through a project for young people aimed at enhancing their sense of place.  Our Place 2020 has inspired young people to want to improve the place in which they live - both now and in the future.

Along the way young people discovered the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for themselves and their communities and they were given a chance to work with committed professionals who helped them develop their vision and their ideas for regeneration.
