The winner of our Fly the Flag for the North East Competition - Hollie Bowens of Sandhill View School, Sunderland - and her classmates spent a morning on board the QE2 when she visited the North East. Click her to see our Fly the Flag photo gallery.
The pupils mixed with loads of celebrities - among them Sir Jimmy Saville. Click here to find out more.
And the winner is...
by Hollie Bowens
Year 8, Sandhill View School, Sunderland
The judges were impressed that Hollie managed to capture so much of the North East's culture and heritage, as well as so many famous landmarks in her design.
Our finalists
It was a difficult decision to pick one winner from so many great designs. The standard of entries was very high and our judges had a hard time choosing the contest winner. Here are those who made it through to the final:
by Ashley Sharratt
by Emma Smith
by Sarah Bernardi
by Francesca March
by Stacey Robson
We asked schoolchildren from across the region to design a flag to fly on the historic QE2 when she visits the North East for the first time as part of her 40th anniversary voyage. The prize was not only to see their flag representing the region but also to tour the famous ship and meet her captain.
The QE2 arrives in the Port of Tyne on Sunday September 16. On Monday September 17 the winning designer and a group of classmates will go on board the liner to meet the captain, enjoy a guided tour of her public decks and enjoy refreshments during a two hour visit. They will also be presented with a souvenir flag created from their winning design.
