EBC's All Directions Regional schools competition

C'est la!..... Hier ist es!..... Aqui es!

Around 1,000 young people are involved in All Directions - EBC's most ambitious inter-school competition to date. Schools from across the region are being challenged to create a new 'tourist product' in EBC's latest modern foreign language competition - All Directions - thanks to continued support from the Regional Language Network North East.

All Directions began in June and runs until March 2011 with 20 schools taking part in both large scale events and classroom work designed to bring to life the importance of good modern foreign language skills.

The need for pupils to be able to communicate in a modern foreign language is more important than ever before – whether for social, leisure or employment purposes.

Despite the obvious benefits to young people being able to speak a foreign language, there is growing concern that at the age of 14 many pupils are opting out of foreign language learning.  All Directions is designed to help reverse that trend.

Through All Directions four schools from each of the five sub regions will compete with each other for a place in the regional final.  To earn that place they will take on the role of company teams travelling to a European trade fair to promote their companies to potential European partners and customers.

The All Directions sub-regional heats are providing vital practical experience of learning through an exciting, stimulating range of activities reinforcing the value of a modern foreign language in terms of business and industry, travel and tourism.

Finalists will take part in The Language Apprentice challenge, pitching their new tourist product ideas to a team of business experts from the world of marketing, promotions, business and finance, with around 75 young people taking part.

Pupils will be supported by Business Language Champions throughout their language enterprise journey in the All Directions programme.  Autumn sees the Business Language Champions visiting participating schools to deliver special school assemblies designed  to reinforce the importance of modern foreign language skills in terms of business, industry, travel and tourism.   They will then work with individual school teams as they develop their competition entries.

Community Leaders for the Future Competition

In recent years EBC has become one of region's the leading organisations in delivering innovative, creative and challenging competitions for young people.

All competitions are designed to motivate those that take part to learn, develop new skills and gain an insight into the world of work, business and commerce whilst showing their creativity, entrepreneurial skills and flair.

Community Leaders of the Future is the latest inter-school competition to be run by EBC and sees local schools paired up with third sector organisations in their communities.

Using a £100 seed fund teams of young people are being challenged to turn that cash into larger pots of money for the benefit of a third sector organisation in their area.  The money they raise will go to their selected third sector partner organisation.

Young people are choosing the organisation they want to work with and once schools and partners are paired they have up to 20 months to raise as much money as possible through the creation of a mini enterprise.  They will also take part in three special enterprise market days and during their third sector enterprise journey will gain accredited qualifications which recognise their efforts. There are trophies to recognise particularly outstanding efforts.

After visits by around 20 local organisations schools will selected their third sector partners.

Community Leaders of the Future sees young people gaining qualifications, experience of becoming entrepreneurs, the world of work and an insight into how they can help local organisations and get involved in their work.

Community Leaders of the Future sees third sector organisations getting access to a pool of young volunteers, extra cash raised by the young people and the chance to develop the community leaders of the future.

Everyone's a winner!

The project is being funded by four of the five Area Committees of Sunderland City Council - East, West, North and Coalfields through their Strtegic Initiatives Budget.

The Play's the Thing!

Thanks to continued support from the NHS South of Tyne and Wear's Safe, Sensible, Social,Small Grant scheme EBC was able to extend the range of downloadable resources it has created to raise  awareness of the dangers of alcohol misuse in young people.

EBC received funding to work with a group of members of South Hylton Youth North East group (SHY-NE) to write and perform a play  - A Shot at Life - about the impact alcohol misuse can have on young people's lives.

SHY-NE members led on the script writing and all stages of the production process before performed their production for an invited audience.

To help them get to grips with the challenge, SHY-NE members first played our Safe, Sensible Social board game developed through earlier Safe, Sensible, Social small grants funding.

Their knowledge of the issues around alcohol misuse were further increased with a briefing session from a member of NECA's team, backed up by internet research.

Script writing, set design and props gathering followed, along with a week of rehearsals before the young people took to the stage to perform their play.

The play - A Shot at Life - tells the story of Chantelle, an 18-year-old girl who finds herself pregnant, verging on alcoholism with few friends or family to support her.

It charts her journey in the two years leading up to her doctor's appointment and then looks into the future to predict one of two routes her life might take - depending upon whether she tackles her drinking problem, or not.
